Solve for Happy was his first book, which sold nearly half a million copies and has been translated into more than 30 languages. He had a surprising reaction to the tragedy: he started writing a book about happiness. In 2014, Gawdat’s life was turned on its head when his young son Ali died during a routine operation. He went on to become Chief Business Officer of Google X – the company’s semi-secret moonshot factory, where engineers ditch the boring stuff and tackle projects like self-driving cars and giant internet-beaming balloons.
The Egyptian-born numbers whizz was tapped by Google in 2007, after making a fortune on the stock market.
